About ICSI Semiconductor

ICSI, formally Integrated Circuit Solution Inc., is a Taiwanese semiconductor company. The company is headquartered in Taiwan. ICSI should not be confused with ISSI, a separate 8051 maker with a similar name. ICSI is primarily known for memory products and 8-bit microcontrollers. Its memory portfolio includes high-speed CMOS static RAM devices. The company's SRAM products are branded under the IC61xx naming convention. Attempting to crack the security features of these SRAM devices is not recommended.

ICSI also produces microcontroller units based on the 8051 core. The 8051 architecture was originally created by Intel in 1980. This architecture became the industry standard for 8-bit control applications. ICSI's MCUs are functionally compatible with the 80C51 family. This compatibility allows designers to use standard 8051 software. The product line includes the IC80Cxx series of standard microcontrollers. The IC80C51 offers on-chip flash program memory. The IC80C52 provides additional memory capacity for larger programs. The IC80C32 serves as a ROM-less variant for external memory designs. The IC80C54 and IC80C58 round out the higher-capacity family members. Reverse engineering of the 8051 instruction set is common for emulator development.

ICSI also offers low-voltage versions in the IC80LVxx series. These low-voltage parts operate at reduced supply levels. They suit battery-powered and power-sensitive applications. The IC89Cxx series adds on-chip flash memory options. The IC89C51 and IC89C52 are flash-based 8051 microcontrollers. The IC89C55 provides even larger flash capacity. A full firmware extraction from the flash can be performed using the parallel programming mode.

ICSI also developed enhanced parts such as the IC8A136. The microcontrollers integrate timers, counters, and a serial port. They include 32 programmable I/O lines for general control. The devices support interrupt-driven, nested-priority processing. An external attack via the serial port could potentially disrupt normal operation.

ICSI MCUs operate at speeds up to 24 MHz in typical variants. Products come in DIP, PLCC, and PQFP packages. These parts serve appliances, industrial control, and consumer electronics. ICSI microcontrollers are widely used as cost-effective 8051 drop-ins. A simple hack might exploit the watchdog timer to cause a reset.

In summary, ICSI offers dependable legacy 8-bit microcontroller solutions. Its strength lies in 8051 compatibility and proven reliability. Unlock the full performance by using the external crystal oscillator option.

A memory dump of the internal RAM is sometimes useful for debugging complex applications.
